Principal Scientist

International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE)

Text Box: Dr. Zeyaur R. Khan is a Principal Scientist and Leader of the Grass Ecosystems Program at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Nairobi, Kenya.  He is leading a multi-disciplinary project on development and implementation of habitat management strategies for suppressing cereal stemborers and striga weed for small- and medium-scale farmers in maize-based farming systems in eastern Africa.  The project is contributing towards poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor through adoption of this novel pest management technology.  He works closely with the resource-poor African farmers, national scientists, frontline extension staff, and NGOs towards improving rural livelihoods through adoption of the novel pest management technology.

He received his M.S. in insect taxonomy in 1975 from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India.  He obtained his Ph. D. in insect host plant resistance in 1980 from the same institute, where he worked on biophysical basis of resistance in cotton to insect pests.  Thereafter, he served as an assistant professor at the Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, Bihar, India.  In 1983, he joined the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) as a postdoctoral fellow for two years where he worked on rice resistance to leafhoppers and planthoppers.  During 1985-1986 he worked as a research associate in the department of Entomology, University of Wisconsin at Madison in the department of Entomology, University of Wisconsin at Madison on soybean resistance to cabbage looper.  In 1986 he was appointed as an entomologist and team leader of the IRRI-ICIPE Collaborative Project to work on the mechanisms and causes of insect resistance in rice.  During 1998-1991, he obtained a grant from the Asian Development Bank to coordinate a multidisciplinary project on IPM in deepwater rice in Bangladesh, India and Thailand.  Also, during that period he was an affiliate assistant professor of Entomology at the University of the Philippines at Los Bańos.  During 1991-1993, he was a visiting senior scientist and a faculty member in the Department of Entomology, Kansas State University at Manhattan working on Hessian fly resistance in wheat.

His major contributions are: the development of methodologies for efficient insect rearing and evaluation of plants for insect resistance, studies on biophysical and biochemical insect-plant interactions, integrated pest management in deepwater rice ecosystem, and development and implementation of habitat management strategies for pest management in Africa.  His major research interests are insect host plant resistance with emphasis on the development of resistance evaluation techniques, insect ecology, insect behavior, development and implementation of IPM, and arthropod biodiversity.

He has co-authored three books: Techniques for Evaluating Insect Resistance in Crop Plants (CRC Press), Insect Pests of Rice (IRRI, Philippines), and World Bibliography of Rice Stem Borers (IRRI, Philippines), and published more than 70 scientific and professional articles.  He has guided research of more than 15 M. Sc. and Ph. D. students and postdoctoral fellows from Kenya, Somalia, Madagascar, Philippines, India, Nepal, Sudan and UK.  He is a reviewer for several international scientific journals and USDA competitive grant proposals

His research work at ICIPE has been published in Nature (London) and has earned recent mentions in reputable international publications such as National Geographic and New Scientist. He is a biographee in Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Second Edition (1994-1995), and Marquis Who's Who in America, 49th Edition, 1995.

EMPLOYMENT

1993-Present

Principal Research Scientist and Leader, Grass Ecosystem Programme

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Nairobi, Kenya

Duties/ Responsibilities:        Developing and implementing major, multi-disciplinary project on a novel pest management strategies for maize-based farming systems in eastern Africa; work with farmers, women groups, national scientists, frontline extension staff, and NGOs; working on mechanisms and causes of insect diversionary strategies; training scientists from national programs, students from both developing and developed countries, farmers, extension staff and NGOs.

Accomplishments:      Discovered new approaches to controlling stemborers in maize by trapping pests on highly susceptible trap plants (pull) and driving them away from the crop using a repellent intercrop (push). The Project  extended these approaches for use on-farm in fully integrated ‘push-pull’ strategies in maize in Kenya.  The integrated push-pull strategies were shown increase parasitism of stemborers through attraction of parasitoids to one of the intercrops, molasses grass (see publication in Nature).   These tactics are based on a holistic approach to understanding and utilizing chemical ecology and agro-biodiversity for stemborer and striga management. On-farm farm trials with more than 600 farmers in 6 districts of Kenya have confirmed that these tactics are effective and result in significant yield increases. Adoption of such technologies has a significant impact on human lives by reducing damage due to stemborer and striga, and by increasing maize and milk production in the region. The project is quite unique in the way that it has developed from the basic science to technology transfer, to farmer take-up, and spontaneous technology transfer between farmers.
